Lake Murray is a 48,000 acre lake that borders Chapin, Irmo, Lexington, Newberry County and is only a short drive from downtown Columbia. The lake with 699 miles or shoreline was originally built in the 1930s as a hydroelectric generating facility, but now it is a place for people all over the midlands to come enjoy a relaxing day with their family on the lake.
